Retinal Disease

Macular degeneration, or retinal eye disease, is the most common cause of sight loss amongst the elderly. The macula is part of the retina which receives central vision. The retina is a lining of light sensitive cells which responds to the images seen by the eye. Sight loss occurs gradually, or in some cases rapidly, as the macula degenerates. Drugs are being developed to slow down this degeneration in sight and research is investigating the possibility of transferring cells from donated eyes to rectify macular degeneration.

It is vital that new research is carried out to invesitgate why it happens and seek new treatments.

Funds from NERC are supporting the Bristol Eye Hospital, which is carrying out research and examining risks that lead to retinal damage.
