![]() Helping UsDonationsMuch of the research supported by the Centre is only possible because of the voluntary income the charity receives. Much of this is in the form of legacies, but the balance results from individual donations, preferably given in a tax efficient manner. Individual donations, if they are made from income on which tax has been paid, are eligible for ‘Gift Aid’ whereby the charity reclaims the tax, currently 28p for every £1, and higher rate taxpayers can obtain further relief. Individuals can donate through the ‘Give As You Earn’ scheme, providing their employer operates such a scheme. Under this scheme, the donor agrees to the amount they wish to give the charity from their weekly or monthly pay and the charity receives this amount, plus the tax that has been deducted. Some individuals generously donate by regular payments by Standing Order or Direct Debit, thus giving the charity an assured source of income. Other individuals prefer to donate by running fundraising activities, be it a coffee morning, garden party, sponsored event or activity or sale of Christmas cards or other items. Items can be sold on eBay and 10% or more of the proceeds given to charity. Corporate organisations can donate to charities and are permitted to give a proportion of their profits free of tax. |
