About Us

Introduction

I am honored to have been asked to become the Chairman of the National Eye Research Centre, a very successful charity, raising large amounts of money for eye research.

I am a chartered accountant who spent all my working years in the profession including over 20 years as a partner in Price Waterhouse. In 2000 I was appointed Treasurer of the University of Bristol, an honorary appointment, as well as being a member of Council. I am a Trustee of a number of charities including St Monica Trust and the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

I know how much the University values the support the National Eye Research Centre gives to funding eye research undertaken by the Department of Ophthalmology and I am so glad that the Centre is supporting an increased amount of research in Yorkshire and in other eye research establishments.

Tim Thom, Chairman

The National Eye Research Centre is a registered charity whose purpose is to fund research into the causes and treatment of eye diseases and disabilities and the prevention of blindness and to publish the results.

The major part of the research it supports is carried out by the Unit of Ophthalmology at the University of Bristol, but research is also supported in Yorkshire, where it has a branch known as Yorkshire Eye Research, and in other eye research establishments throughout the United Kingdom.

There are many charities seeing to the welfare of the blind and partially sighted, but it is only successful eye research that will lead to a reduction in the number of people with eye problems.

The National Eye Research Centre is governed by a Board of Trustees whose current Chairman is Mr Tim Thom. The Chief Executive is the Director, Colonel Sam Gaussen who is assisted by Mrs Sheryn Miller.
